A Drop of Wisdom

There’s the pain that comes with opening your heart.
There’s also the pain of remaining closed and constricted.
What will you do?
What will you choose?
If we have any choices in our lives, this is the one we get again and again and again. This choice comes in many disguises, daily.
This pain is our best friend or our worst enemy, and it is always up to us.

The Gift- an inspirational sharing from Sariah

As the season for Thanks giving is once again here, be inspired by this sharing from our Temple sister Sariah. The following episode took place in LA a few months ago as she was visiting her son.

Late one night at the urgings of my sons belly we found ourselves deep in the belly of the beast, Los Angeles, stopping at a fast food establishment on the outskirts of Skid Row.  As I remained in the car he ran across a wide 4 lane street to reach his destination.  Standing on the sidewalk ahead of him was a homeless panhandler most likely an addict looking to support his next fix or perhaps fill his own belly with his only meal of the day. I was sitting in the dark car waiting, very aware that I was very visible on this well lit, lonely street, when I saw the homeless man walking directly towards me, passing in front of the car and stopping right outside my door. Then he simply stood there.

Though this was a person larger than me, a different gender than me, a different color than me... different than me... with paths that ordinarily would never cross…here we were.  He simply just stood there in arms reach if I were to open the window.  I took a breath, allowed the experience to sink in and I checked in with my response to it all... no fear, just an alert presence to the moment’s happenings. I do not look at him but just continue to feel his presence next to me.

Suddenly the energy shifts and I feel his alertness and power rise and my focus is drawn across the street again.  Coming towards me is another large man locked into my car and the man by my side... I watch and I feel and witness... the man by my side stands tall and firm as he greets this new stranger approaching and the two exchange some territorial contact and then the second man simply passes by continuing on his way.  I breathe. I look at the man.  He smiles... soft, warm, proud. Soon after which by this point what seems like hours have passed my son arrives and hops into the car. The man departs.

So, I say to my son, funny thing happened while you were gone and I tell him what had happened.  When finished, he says to me, "Mom, when I ran across the street I got this impression that I needed to give this man the $2 in my pocket.  When I did, I stopped and pointed to my car across the street and told that man that that was my mother in the car and would he please watch over her while I was gone".

This dear man had stood silently by me earning his $2.  Is that the end of the story?  I doubt it.  For what really happened in that exchange was one young man giving the gift of self respect and acceptance to another more seasoned man; one human connecting to another in TRUST irregardless of outside appearances and circumstances.  Whether the $2 supported the belly or the beast of this man is of no consequence... what does make a difference is that for a moment this man was given respect and pride and value for his presence on this sweet Earth and his valued place in the whole. And even more than that, there was an equal exchange that took place... one precious learning moment in the circle of giving and receiving.  Who received more?  The man with his $2 and a dose of self respect? My son embracing another opportunity to model compassion and equality while feeling the joy of the human connection? Myself, receiving protection from both males, experiencing the honor of the feminine, getting the personal opportunity to see love, not fear; response, not reaction?

It is often said that our children are our greatest teachers.  For myself, this truth has impacted my life 1000 times and more. This little episode is simply a reminder of our ability to mend the holes in the fabric of our collective existence one on one... each connection we make with each other as we travel this physical journey DOES MATTER! THE PEBBLE DROPPED INTO THE POND CREATES A RIPPLE THAT EXPANDS FAR BEYOND ITS FIRST CONTACT WITH THE WATER. It is my prayer and intention for all of us that we BE that pebble while walking this Earth and connect with ALL life with EVERY BREATH AND STEP WE TAKE...
Namaste (the god in me bows to the god in you), Sariah...:)
